Old Shanghai to be recreated on Duolun Road
TOURISTS will be able to get a taste of old Shanghai life on Duolun Road, Hongkou District.
A 542-meter stretch of road will be torn up and replaced with granite stones. The work will be completed by April.
The road will not be closed to the public during reconstruction, district officials said today.
Even the street lamps and manhole covers on the road will be replaced by old-style ones to give the area the genuine look of old Shanghai.
Cables and wires will be put underground so as not to spoil the scene.
In the early 20th century, several famous writers and celebrities, including Lu Xun and Mao Dun, lived on Duolun Road.
"It's great that the road will be restored," said Ikea Zhao, a local woman. "Florence has many such roads."
She has just returned from a trip to Italy and enjoyed strolling along the cobblestone streets in the famous Italian city.
