Orchestra will open its doors to all nationalities

SHANGHAI Symphony Orchestra has announced that it will for the first time admit musical performers from all over the world.

More than 100 positions comprise the orchestra and auditions will be held in Shanghai, Berlin and New York in July, said Yu Long, musical director of the orchestra.

Of a total of 105 performer positions in the orchestra, all except the orchestra principal and the musical director are open to the public.

Any interested musician can apply for an audition before the deadline of June 30.

Five principals from world-class symphony orchestras will be invited to Shanghai to judge the auditions.

Established in 1879, Shanghai Symphony Orchestra was the first professional orchestra in China and one of the most influential orchestral ensembles in Asia.

It has performed near 10,000 concerts, premiered several thousand works and collaborated with many world-class conductors, soloists and vocalists.

Since Maestro Yu Long became musical director and chief conductor in 2009, the orchestra has embarked on a long-term program of expansion and artistic growth.

"Shanghai Symphony will endeavor to promote Chinese music while advancing and enriching its long tradition, securing its place in the world as the authoritative interpreter of Chinese orchestral music," said Yu.

"We welcome talented musicians from all over the world with an open heart."

Application forms and details are available in English and Chinese at the Website http://audition.sh-symphony.com/index.html.
