Park to offer kung fu lessons for expats
Quyang Park in Hongkou District will undergo renovations, starting next week, and on completion will be renamed Chin Woo Park.
When the park opens to the public it will feature Chinese Kung fu training centers that will offer free lessons to both locals and expatriates, said Hua Dongping, executive deputy director of the Chin Woo Athletic Federation. The park will also boast bronze sculptures of martial arts heros like Huo Yuanjia and other Chinese Kung fu masters, said Hua.
Huo Yuanjia is hailed as a Chinese hero after defeating foreign fighters in highly publicized kung fu bouts staged by the Chin Woo Athletic Association in Shanghai in the 1900s. His status as a national hero soared after the release of the 2006 film “Fearless” in which martial arts hero Jet Li played Huo.
The centers at the park will offer free martial arts training in the morning every day. Bilingual trainers from local universities and federation members, will offer lessons to foreigners, said Xue Hairong, vice president of the federation.
Thousands of locals, mostly senior citizens, have attended the classes offered by the federation. The district opened the Chin Woo Gymnasium early last month.
