Pics show Hongkou’s glory days

HONGKOU District archives yesterday released a book of the area’s history, with many previously unpublished photos of early foreign consulates.

Most of the 14 consulates in Shanghai were based in Hongkou within the former US concession, including those of Russia — later the Soviet Union — Germany, the United States and Japan.

In one photo, taken in 1875, the Astor House Hotel can be seen standing beside the Waibaidu Bridge, which was a wooden structure at the time. The book contains 680 photos and covers 1843-1949.

Most of the consulates were relocated during the War of Resistance Aagainst Japanese Agression between 1931 and 1945, although the Russian consulate remains. The Japanese consulate on 106 Huangpu Road served as the Japanese administrative headquarters during the war and was taken over by the Kuomintang government in 1945.
