Professionals discuss film adaption from novels
THE 20th Century Fox Film Corporation held a workshop to discuss the adaptation of popular online novels into film and TV productions today during the 20th Shanghai International Film Festival.
Liu Lianzi, author of the hit online novels "The Legend of Zhen Huan" and "Ruyi's Royal Love in the Palace," attended the workshop.
Liu is also scriptwriter of the TV dramas based on the two novels.
In 2012, the 76-episode TV drama "The Legend of Zhen Huan" directed by Zheng Xiaolong was among the highest-rated TV productions.
It centers on imperial concubines who are competing for the emperor's affection with scheming and intrigue. In addition to TV series, it has also been adapted into Yueju Opera stage performance.
The series "Ruyi's Royal Love in the Palace," starring Zhou Xun and Wallace Huo is also one of the most highly-anticipated dramas of China.
"As a scriptwriter, I have to set the story to a certain historical backdrop and create detailed scenes and characters," said Liu. "But I also manage to make up for the regrets and deficiency when I was writing the novel."
Zhang Xiaobei, film critic and director of the sci-fi movie "Path Finder," speaks highly of the successful film adaptation of "Life of Pi" and "The Godfather."
"The most challenging part of the change from words to images is how to visualize the imaginative world created in the novels," said Zhang.
"Words usually have no boundary of imagination. But when they are turned into sequences on the screen, scriptwriter and director must take budget and technology into consideration."
Professionals added that film and TV drama also have limited length to tell the story. They need complete lines of drama conflicts and special storytelling methods. Not all best-selling novels are appropriate to be adapted into sequences.
Today Millennium Pictures also released its new epic film project "731."
Directed by Zhao Linshan, the film set to the backdrop of 1930s will start shooting next year. It depicts how Chinese people suffered during the war.
