Rising drama star won't be forgetting his traditional roots

YUEJU Opera singer Yu Shaoqun is a lucky man in many eyes. The 25-year-old rose to overnight fame for his vivid portrayal as the young Peking opera master Mei Lanfang in Chen Kaige's biopic film "Forever Enthralled."

Yu did such a fine job of capturing the enigmatic master's charisma that he might even have outshone the star, Leon Lai, who plays the master as an adult.

"The movie gave me a big boost of confidence about my new venture in film and TV drama acting," Yu said. He is in town to prepare for the shooting of a TV drama.

Born in Wuhan, Hubei Province, Yu spent 12 years being professionally trained as a wusheng, the male role in Yueju and Hanju, two traditional Chinese operas. He says he will not give up his opera singing career since it is also where his passion lies. "I'm trying to continue keeping things balanced in terms of different genres," he said. "My dream is to direct and star in a stage production of 'A Dream of Red Mansions.'"
