Shanghai Kunqu Opera Troup opens new training class

Shanghai Kunqu Opera Troupe today opened a new training class about the performing art and vocal style of the late Kunqu and Peking Opera master Yu Zhenfei.

Yu, founder and former director of the troupe, cultivated generations of Kunqu Opera artists and influenced the development of the traditional theater.

The one-year class opens to young talented Kunqu Opera performers from all over the country. The first batch of 20 students will receive systematic training from Yu's students Cai Zhengren and Yue Meidi in vocal art and acting.

"Yu's art is distinctive and still alive in our hearts," said the 75-year-old artist Cai Zhengren. "The class is an effort to preserve and promote the art."

Officials from the troupe said that the curriculum will be videotaped and digitally preserved. Report performances will also be held at Yifu Theater.

With a history of around 600 years, Kunqu Opera is China's oldest forms of opera. It was also recognized by UNESCO as a masterpiece of humanity's intangible heritage.
