Shanghai violin contest honors Isaac Stern

THE first Shanghai Isaac Stern International Violin Competition will kick off in August, offering a top prize of US$100,000.

About 140 violinists from 26 counties and regions applied, but only 34 candidates were selected to participate in the competition, which will run from August 14 to September 2.

The jury will include the violin masters Zakhar Bron, Boris Kuschnir and Maxim Vengerov, as well as renowned Chinese violin instructors Wang Zhenshan and Yu Lina. Conductor David Stern, son of Isaac Stern, and violinist Vera Tsu Weiling will serve as the jury’s co-chairpersons.

The competition is named after the famous US violinist Isaac Stern, not only as a tribute to his remarkable music career, but also his enduring influence on classic music in China, according to Zhou Ping, president of the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, the major organizer of the event.

As the first western violin maestro to visit China, in 1979, Stern inspired a great number of young Chinese musicians and music lovers at the time, including the famous cellist Wang Jian and the violinist Vera Tsu Weiling.
