Shikumen protection exhibition

SHANGHAI’S distinctive shikumen homes and their protection is the subject of an exhibition that opened yesterday.

The month-long event at the Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Center is part of promotions for a city plan seeking UNESCO World Heritage status for its shikumen.

Running through October 9, the event introduces shikumen history, cultural meaning, architectural value and historic protection through models and illustrations, said center curator Hang Yan.

Lectures will also be held, Hang added.

First built in the mid 19th century, shikumen refers to a Shanghainese style of architecture combining Western building style and China’s courtyard structures.

In their heyday, there were more than 9,000 shikumen in the city.

However, over 70 percent of Shanghai’s shikumen have been demolished to make way for urban renewal.

Local architects and historians have been researching the buildings and plan to launch the UNESCO World Heritage application by the end of the year, Zhang Xuemin, director with the Shanghai Shikumen Culture Research Center told Shanghai Daily.
