Sperm whale gets a make-over
CHINA’S biggest preserved sperm whale specimen — weighing about 60 tons — started getting a thorough “bath” which includes dust elimination, crack repair, color retention and anti-corrosion treatment on Friday.
The whale, 18.4 meters long and 9 meters high, has been on display for 14 years at a whale museum inside the Jungong Road campus of Shanghai Ocean University. The exhibit includes the whale’s backbone, separate from its stuffed body.
The specimen was first spotted by fishermen on the Qiongzhou Strait in 2001 and it took more than one year to prepare it for display.
The “bath” will take about two weeks to finish.
