Sun Yat-sen 150th to be celebrated in style

A series of activities will be held to celebrate the 150th birthday of Sun Yat-sen, known as the great forerunner of China’s democratic revolution, authorities said yesterday.
Government officials, Sun’s relatives, and representatives from home and abroad will visit the Shanghai Sun Yat-sen Former Residence Museum on 7 Xiangshan Road to commemorate him. This was his last residence in the city and is the best preserved.
Another ceremony will be held at the Shanghai Exhibition Center on November 12, Sun’s birthday.
An exhibition of Sun’s private photograph collection will be launched on Tuesday. This will feature more than 100 original photos and Sun’s personal belongings to tell the story of his life through family and friends. Most of the objects are being displayed for the first time to the public.
The photographs include Sun and some members of Tongmenghui (Chinese Revolutionary League) that wanted to overthrow the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911); Sun’s grandson Sun Zhi-ping when he was a baby; and a shot of Soong Ching-ling’s family taken in Shanghai in 1913.
The exhibition will be held until the end of December. Admission is free.
Another photo exhibition will be unveiled on November 8, four days before Sun’s birthday, to show his contribution to China’s national revival. This exhibition is being planned and will be held in the China Finance Information Building at Lujiazui in Pudong.
A book about Sun’s family is also scheduled to be published during the exhibition, expected to run at least one month.
A contest has also been launched by the Shanghai Revolutionary Committee of the Chinese Kuomintang to invite the public to design souvenirs marking Sun’s anniversary.Designs can be sent to htwcds@163.com up until October 15 and those that pass the initial selection procedure will have to present their actual products by November 15.
Winners will win bonuses up to 30,000 yuan (US$4,490) and their products will be sold at museums, such as Sun’s former residence.
