Sun Yat-sen’s books to go on show to public
A collection of about 200 books once owned by Dr Sun Yat-sen will go on show to the public for the first time on Tuesday at his former home on Xiangshan Road, Huangpu District.
Liu Jinchi, curator of the Shanghai Museum of Sun Yat-Sen’s Former Residence, said the exhibition, which will run for three months, features just a fraction of the 5,000 books at the site.
“Sun was addicted to books. Reading was his favorite pastime,” Liu said.
Among the titles on show will be “The Economic Principles of Confucius and His School” and “A Contribution to the Critique of Political Economy” by Karl Marx, both published in 1911.
Other highlights include a book given to Dr Sun as a Christmas present by his son, the late Sun Ke, and a train ticket from 1918 that Sun used as a bookmark.
“As Dr Sun was educated overseas, several of his books, including Confucius’ ‘Analects,’ are in English,” said Wang Haorong, who is in charge of the upcoming exhibition.
Before his death, Sun gave his books to his wife Soong Ching Lin. The couple lived at the house from 1918 to his death in 1925.
Soong continued to live there until 1937.
