TV industry veterans share experience at China Formats
THE China Formats event, a program of the 23rd Shanghai TV Festival kicked off today. Professionals from well-known TV production companies worldwide gathered in Shanghai, talking about the trends of entertainment and future variety formats.
TV industry veterans from international studios and companies such as Sony Pictures Television, BBC, Talpa Global and FremantleMedia Group shared their expertise and experience in creating successful entertainment format franchises at workshops.
Outstanding original format pitches will also be honored tomorrow at the China TV Format Pitching Competition. Six paper formats with big market potentials have been selected from around 400 entries. They will battle for the golden awards. Some of the winners will be developed and funded.
Gao Qi, editorial director of "Review" and a TV expert noted that many successful formats have things in common - originality, cultural elements, family-oriented and positive energy.
"Cultural shows get much more popular these days in China such as 'Poetry Hero' and 'Reader' and 'Letters Alive'," Gao said. "In the future, domestic variety shows are expected to have stronger emotional and interactive connection. They will become smart and funny, with bigger investment and more refined production skills."
