Testing time for trying to get into theater academy
CHINESE youngsters are betting big on the entertainment business.
A record number of students — 21,782 — sat for the entrance examination to Shanghai Theater Academy yesterday for a total of 418 places in acting, directing, TV hosting and script writing.
Xu Yong, an admission official from the academy, said the number of students vying for seats had almost doubled since 2012.
The exams will last until February 24. Only one out of 245 applicants will win the most sought-after berth in the acting department.
Applicants will be tested in recitation, singing, dancing, gymnastics and an impromptu performance.
The judges include celebrated actors, theater experts and directors.
Wang Luoyong, director of the academy’s musical theater center, said the etiquette and virtues of students will also be taken into account.
Successful candidates will also have to sit for a nationwide college entrance exam which takes place in June.
