Travel agencies shun Bangkok tours
Travel agencies are replacing tour packages to Bangkok with trips elsewhere in Thailand following latest wave of political turmoil to hit the Thai capital.
Tens of thousands of Thai opposition protesters occupied major streets in central Bangkok yesterday in an attempted “shutdown” of the capital.
The Shanghai Tourism Administration said there were 28 local tour groups with more than 400 tourists in Bangkok.
All of them were reported safe.
The National Tourism Administration has reminded Chinese travelers to Thailand to take precautions and stay away from protest sites. The Chinese embassy in Thailand also urged Chinese citizens not to wear red or yellow clothes to avoid trouble.
Online travel operator Ctrip said it had changed tour routes of all groups who were scheduled to visit Bangkok. Instead they were being directed to Phuket, Koh Samui and Chiang Mai.
Tourists can seek refunds if the alternate venues don’t interest them.
Zhao Dexiang, general manager of Shanghai International Travel Co Ltd, said they were promoting other destinations such as Vietnam, Sri Lanka and Cambodia for local tourists.
