Violinists chosen for final round
SIX young contestants made it to the final round of the 1st Shanghai Isaac Stern International Violin Competition yesterday. They were Japan’s Mayu Kishima, Russia’s Sergei Dogadin, Stefan Tarara from Germany, Liu Ming from China, and Americans Richard Lin and Sirena Huang.
All the contestants performed brilliantly in the semifinal, which made it very difficult for the juries to choose the final contestants, said David Stern yesterday. He congratulated those who made it and told them they should “never stop thinking” about music.
Tarara made it to the final round by creatively incorporating the melody of the Chinese concerto Butterfly Lover into his cadenza for Mozart’s Concerto, which dazzled the audience.
“I did not know that I would be the only one to use Butterfly Lover in the cadenza. I tried that for fun at first, but the melody fit perfectly in the harmony,” says Tarara, “It was a natural choice for me … because I respect the culture and music here.”
Huang was pleasantly surprised when she was selected: “It is very difficult to make the final. I feel grateful to make it and I will just do my best.”
Fellow American Lin said that his Chinese ethnic background may have played a role in helping him to understand and interpret Butterfly Lover, adding that he was impressed by the other contestants’ work.
“Music as an art is very subjective. There is no definite best as with sports races,” said Lin, “We may not survive today if facing another group of judges.”
The final round will be held on September 1-2. The contestants are expected to cooperate with the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra on a concerto. The first prize is US$100,000.
