World stars for festival

SHANGHAI Ballet's "Marco Polo - The Last Mission" and 45 other shows will be staged during the month-long 12th Shanghai International Arts Festival which kicks off on September 27.

Zubin Mehta is to conduct the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra at the closing ceremony concert.

Other world-renowned artists will include conductor Vasily Petrenko, the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, flautist James Galway, violinist Lukas Hagen, viola soloist Iris Juda-Hagen, Camerata Salzburg from Austria, Stuttgarter Kammerorchester, the Boni Pueri Boys Choir from Czech, Hugarian pianist Jeno Jando, Israeli pianist Arie Vardi, Chinese American pianist Chen Hung-Kuan and Japanese pop band Vamps.

A multimedia concert "Planet String" by MASS Ensemble will make its debut at the Shanghai Grand Theater in October. At the same venue, the Chinese four-act opera "Song of Farewell" created and performed by Shanghai Opera House and Shanghai Symphony Orchestra will receive its world premiere.

Hong Kong will launch a special Hong Kong Cultural Week as part of the festival.
