Young directors moan about lack of support for genre films
Despite the industry raking in profits, young Chinese directors expressed concerns about the lack of professional directors, lack of variety and lack of investment for the alternate and small-budget films.
"I became a film director because there aren't enough of them, especially not in genre movies," said comedian-turned-director Xu Zheng. "I couldn't get good roles in other filmmakers' movies, so I had to direct my own."
China's box office grew by 30 percent to 17.07 billion yuan (US$2.74 billion) in 2012. It touched 10 billion yuan two days ago for 2013, meaning it was likely to make over 20 billion yuan in profits.
"The majority of the Chinese audience today are young people around 20 years old," said Guo Jingming, a bestselling author. "So we can't make movies like we did in the old times. We have to do something to attract these young people."
"The current Chinese film market is not mature enough in terms of offering a variety of genres," said veteran director He Ping. "We need more genres to satisfy audience with different demands."
