A winning blend of style and sense
SINCE designer Anya Hindmarch's "I'm not a plastic bag" canvas shopping bag was snapped up by shoppers even including many celebrities, eco-friendly bags have become fashionable for corporate gifts and design contests.
Design 13, a designer clothing shop on Maoming Road, is giving eco-friendly bags as a gift to celebrate its recent opening. People can get a free bag by leaving their name card.
"The bags are designed by the store's owner," a saleswoman told Shanghai Daily. "They are popular with customers and our owner said they are a good way to express the ethos of the shop," she said.
Shanghai Roots and Shoots, a local branch of an international non-profit organization devoted to environmental protection, has held workshops to paint eco-friendly shopping bags in 32 schools and two communities since stores began to charge for plastic bags on June 1 last year.
More than 12,000 eco-friendly bags have been distributed to and painted by locals.
"The bags are fashionable and unique," said Megan Li from Shanghai Roots and Shoots. "Almost all the people who took part said they really like their bags and will use them when they go shopping."
Laya Plaza, a shopping mall in Pudong New Area, held a bag-painting event over the weekend, attracting many children and their parents.
