Air pollution 10 times WHO safe level
AIR pollution in Shanghai this afternoon reached almost 10 times the World Health Organization safe level.
Concentrations of tiny PM2.5 particles, especially harmful as they can get deep into the respiratory system, were recorded at 220 micrograms per cubic meter at 4pm.
The figure considered safe by the WHO is 25 micrograms per cubic meter.
The city’s overall Air Quality Index hit 270 ?heavily polluted.
The Shanghai Meteorological Bureau said still conditions prevented pollutants from dispersing but that stronger winds this evening should improve air quality.
Better conditions are forecast for tomorrow.
Lower temperatures are forecast for the coming days, with the mercury down to 1 degree Celsius in the morning in downtown, and reaching freezing in outlying areas.
