Air quality set to improve today
SHANGHAI was officially “heavily polluted” yesterday as the air quality index rose to 263.
Environment authorities said the pollution was caused by an accumulation of particles triggered by high temperatures, high humidity and low winds.
Beyond the benchmark readings, the AQI hit 278 in Yangpu at 7pm, while the PM2.5 density in the district soared to 227.8 micrograms per cubic meter.
The environment monitoring center said today will start with “moderately polluted” air and light smog, though the offending particles should start to disperse in the afternoon.
Today should also be drier than yesterday, though the rains are set to return this evening, forecasters said.
The wet weather will continue tomorrow and on into Sunday and Monday, forecasters said. Today’s temperatures will range from 14 to 20 degrees Celsius.
