Air quality to worsen today

Local environmental officials said that today’s air quality will be smoggy and severely polluted due to increasing concentration of pollutants caused by cold air floating in from the North.

Today’s morning AQI is expected to exceed 300 and hover between 320 to 350 later in the afternoon to bring it under the “severely polluted” tier, the highest in a six-tier scale, with PM2.5 listed as the main pollutant. But there will be some relief tomorrow. It was a dry and hazy Christmas in the city yesterday. A chilly morning with temperatures of 1 degree Celsius was recorded in most districts, while two districts, Fengxian and Jinshan, reported temperatures in negative. The mercury will drop to zero over the weekend.
