Choking smog vexes Shanghai residents
Shanghai observes the International Women's Day today amid hazy smog as the city's PM2.5 reading reached 140 micrograms per cubic meter at 11am.
The figure nearly doubled the national standard that requires the density of airborne particles smaller than 2.5 micrometers in diameter be kept under 75 micrograms per cubic meter.
Shanghai has been suffering poor air quality for four days running. Local environment officials blamed the pollution to sandstorms in north China.
