City sulphur targets will be met early

THE city will meet a target of upgrading or closing power plants to reduce air pollution six months ahead of schedule, the Shanghai Environmental Protection Bureau said yesterday.

Under the plan, coal-burning generators that produce 7.72 million kilowatts of power are to be fitted with equipment to eliminate sulphur emissions by the end of this year.

So far, 94 percent of the plants have been upgraded and the rest will be done before this June, the bureau said. Coal-burning generators are the primary source of sulfur dioxide in the air.

"Upgrading or closing these generators is the bureau's main way of controlling air pollution and meeting our aim of cutting sulfur dioxide levels 26 percent by the end of 2010," said Xi Ailing, an official from the bureau.

By the end of 2008, the city had closed 695,000 kilowatts worth of small coal-burning generators. The remaining 1.44 million kilowatts worth of small generators will be turned off before the end of 2010.

The government will also give a subsidy to those plants that cut sulphur emissions before 2010.
