City tests for Expo's cool spray
THE water sprayers which are helping cool down the World Expo site are to be tested in Shanghai's communities and schools.
The system has so far proved effective at the Expo. During its first trial operation on May 2, the temperature dropped 6 degrees Celsius 15 minutes after the sprayers were switched on.
Huang Chen, a professor responsible for the design of the sprayers, said yesterday that suitable sites in communities and schools were being sought to further test the system. Testing of the community sprayers is expected to begin in August.
If the sprayers work well in these tests, the technology will be applied more widely in other public areas, Huang said. "We want more people to enjoy the comfort and convenience the technology has brought."
The sprayers being developed for city use are able to reduce temperatures by 1 to 2 degrees Celsius if the mercury climbs above 30 degrees.
