Fog eases but city air remains 'lightly polluted'

SHANGHAI woke up this morning to a blanket of heavy fog with visibility in the outskirts dropping to 300 meters, forecasters said.

The Shanghai Meteorological Bureau issued a yellow alert for the heavy fog at 4:58am, expecting a dense fog reducing the visibility to less than 500 meters in most districts. 

By 8:30am, the foggy weather saw a respite with the visibility in urban center increasing to 2 kilometers. Chongming had its visibility bounce back to 800 meters and the visibility in Jinshan reached 900 meters. But at the Pudong International Airport, the visibility was still 300 meters, affecting several of its flights.

Local weather bureau lifted its heavy fog alert at 10:16am when the weather condition growing better.

Today it will be much warmer with the high hitting 21 degrees Celsius. However, a cold front moving southwards will sweep the city this week and push the temepratures down below 10 degrees. The low is expected to be only 2 degrees on Friday.

The collision of warm and cold airs will also bring some rains between Tuesday and Thursday.

The city has its air quality marked as lightly polluted in the morning.

By 11am, the air quality index climbed to 110 with the PM2.5 concentration reaching 83, tripled the safety guideline set by the World Health Organization.
