Good water lies under our feet, forum hears
SHANGHAI has at least 13 million cubic meters of good quality mineral water under the ground that hasn't been fully exploited, experts told the first China Urban Drinking Water and Health Forum yesterday.
Appropriate use of mineral water could ease the city's shortage of high quality water and offer more healthy water to residents, many of whom prefer the purified variety, experts said at the forum.
Local geological experts said Shanghai only exploited 50 to 60 tons of mineral water every year, while over 90 percent of good water resources were left under the ground.
Niu Xiaoying, a mineral water expert with the Shanghai Geological Committee, said only a fifth of the exploited mineral water was consumed by residents, the rest was used to make beer and other beverages.
"Local residents prefer the taste of purified water to mineral water and they wrongly consider purified water is more healthy," she said.
Niu said about half of Shanghai families drank barreled water at home, in schools and offices and 90 percent of it was purified.
Experts said purified water lacked the minerals and microelements that bodies need.
