Green space to cover half of Shanghai by 2020
SHANGHAI will reserve more land for ecological purpose and restoration in the next five to 10 years, according to the city's new eco-network plan.
The so-called eco-land, including nature reserves, wetlands, forests and certain farmland, will cover half of the city's land area by 2020.
At present much of the city's land is used for construction projects.
Shanghai will build nine eco-corridors connecting the suburbs with the downtown area. Big forests and parks will be created in the eco-corridors.
However it is no easy task as urban construction projects keep eroding the eco-land, said officials at the Municipal Land and Resources Bureau.
In the nine downtown districts, eco-land covers less than 1 percent of the total area, they noted.
Under the city's long-term plan, each resident will enjoy 14 to 16 square meters of greenery, compared with 12 square meters now.
