Heavy air pollution forecast

Moderate to heavy air pollution has been forecast for this morning.

The air quality index is expected to reach between 190 and 210, the Shanghai Environmental Monitoring Center said yesterday.

It advised reducing outdoor activities — especially for seniors, children and people with respiratory diseases.

This is the first time the center has forecast heavy air pollution since it began forecasts in September.

Not surprisingly, forecasters said conditions will be hazy today, with particles blown by a northwest wind.

The Shanghai Meteorological Bureau also reported light haze yesterday, saying particles from the northwest wind and weak atmospheric diffusion are to blame.

Temperatures should reach 22 degrees Celsius today and 26 degrees on Saturday but are expected to fall to a high of 18 degrees on Sunday and 15 degrees on Monday.

Drizzle is predicted over the weekend.
