Little cheer as sunshine brings back pollutants

The weeklong clean air brought by consistent light drizzle ended yesterday with local environmental authorities saying the concentration of main pollutant PM2.5 particles was double the national limit.

Light smog made its way back as stable weather and weaker winds returned after days of drizzle. The PM2.5 density peaked to nearly 180 micrograms per cubic meter at 11am — 2.4 times the national limit of 75 that is considered hazardous to health.

But the Shanghai Environmental Monitoring Center said there may be some relief today when the AQI is expected to be between 95 (good) to 115 (lightly polluted) in the morning.

The center said air quality will get better in the afternoon.

The morning sunshine started to warm the city. At 6am, temperatures in most districts ranged between zero and 1 degree Celsius, with minus 1 in Chongming County and minus 0.9 in Fengxian District. But temperatures soared quickly and touched between 6 to 8 degrees at noon.

It will be cloudy and partly sunny today with a low of 2 and a high of 9. A cloud cover is expected over the weekend with the mercury fluctuating between 3 and 11 degrees. But the rains are set to return next week and Monday’s temperature will range from 6 to 12 degrees. Overcast and wet condition will remain on Tuesday with a low of 8 and a high of 10.
