Local air quality severly polluted as cold front from north sweeps city
A weak cold front is sweeping the city today with the high being pressed to 21 degrees Celsius, bringing pollutants from nortern China and causing city's air condition to be severely polluted, forecasters said.
According to the Shanghai Environmental Monitoring Center, the air quality index topped 100 and was marked as lightly polluted starting 5am. The reading has since kept rising and by 11am was recorded at 406, more than 100 higher than the base line (300) of the severely polluted tier.
The most polluted area is Pudong, with its AQI recorded at 495.
PM10 particles is the main pollutant. The concentration of PM10 hit 506 micrograms per cubic meter, ten times the safety guildeline of 50 set by the World Health Organization.
The environmental monitoring center has warned that children, the elderly and sick people should stay indoors and the ordinary should avoid outdoor activities.
The thundershowers at times today have a chance to alleviate the city's pollution to some degree but a lightly to moderately polluted condition is still expected in the afternoon.
The partly showery weather is likely to last through Monday morning and starting Tuesday, it will be a string of four to five clear days with a bounce-back in temperatures. Wednesday the mercury will reach mid-twenties again under sunny skies.
