Perfumery not to blame for residents' rashes: officials
THERE is no direct evidence to show that the waste gas released from a perfumery caused nearby residents to break out in rashes, government officials said yesterday.
The Pudong New Area environmental authorities checked 28 plants near the Yihua residential community earlier this month after more than 80 residents reported skin rashes.
According to the investigators' findings, all factories released waste that was within acceptable limits.
They said the waste gas released from the vents of the fragrance and flavor factory, a Shanghai branch of Geneva-based Givaudan, met standards, but its sewage had an unpleasant odor and failed to meet national criteria.
Disease control officers said residents' rashes symptoms were all different and there was no direct evidence that the waste released from the perfumery had caused the rashes.
Residents received the results yesterday.
"Some of us also suffer from dizzy head and sore throat after taking in the bad smell," said a resident representative surnamed Yang.
"This may also be caused by the waste gas," Yang said.
Residents still want the company to compensate them, though they have not come up with a plan yet.
The perfumery has been ordered to improve its sewage facilities by next May.
The Pudong environmental authorities have imposed a fine on the factory, but they declined to release the figure.
More than 80 residents of the Yihua community in Pudong's Heqing Town had rashes on their legs, arms and backs.
Residents believed the rashes were caused by the perfumery, separated from the neighborhood by a river.
Some residents had raised banners calling for the factory to be shut down at the end of last month. However, the factory denied the accusation because its employees do not show any symptoms.
