Plan calls for use of more LED lighting

LIGHT emitting diode technology will be used in 30 percent of local homes and roads by the end of the 12th five-year plan (2011-2015), officials told an international LED forum yesterday.

So far LED lighting only covers a small percentage of household lighting. LED lighting is also being tested on roads along the Changjiang tunnel-bridge.

The local government has designated LED as a key industry in the next five-year plan and will promote it in both high-end technology fields and civilian life due its successful use at the World Expo, officials said.

In addition to introducing LED into cutting-edge industries, the government is pushing its use into everything from automobiles and handset screens to laptops and televisions.

Officials said current LED technology is mature enough for household use and road lighting. But it isn't widely adopted due to its high price.

The price of LED lighting is usually three to eight times higher than ordinary lighting, while it uses at least 30 percent less power and have a life span five to six times longer than ordinary lighting.
