Pollution punishment for SK ship
A SOUTH Korean ship that sailed past the Bund belching black smoke has become the first foreign vessel to be punished under Shanghai’s new pollution laws.
The 8521-ton “DongBang Giant No. 1” cargo vessel, which was built in 2005, was sailing along the Huangpu River on November 9 when it was noted by a Shanghai Maritime Safety Administration inspector.
The smoke was caused by the poor condition of a fuel injector, leading to serious air pollution, the administration said yesterday.
Inspectors collected evidence, told the captain to repair the engine and informed the crew of the regulations. A fine will be imposed later, said an official.
Under city regulations introduced in October, vehicles including ships are banned from releasing black smoke.
Anyone found to have breached the rules must take action to stop the pollution and faces fines of between 10,000 yuan (US$1,630) and 50,000 yuan for serious violations or between 1,000 yuan and 10,000 yuan for lesser offences.
On Thursday, another ship was caught belching out thick black smoke 400 meters from Nanpu Bridge.
