Probe into dead fish in creek
AN investigation has begun after dead fish were found floating on the surface of Suzhou Creek.
Officials from the Shanghai Environmental Protection Bureau said water samples had been collected but it would be several days before the results of laboratory tests were known.
The bureau said it received calls from residents about the dead fish on Monday and officials were sent to the scene on Monday night and Tuesday.
However, they didn't find any pollutant discharged from plants near the creek. All the plants had installed drainage pipes to collect and process chemical and industrial waste, which wasn't discharged into the creek.
Liu Weiguang from the Shanghai Greenery and Public Sanitation Bureau said its staff collected about 20 dead fish on Tuesday and 70 to 80 in the section between Xikang Road Bridge and Wuning Road Bridge yesterday. "Now the creek is clean with only sporadic dead fish," he said.
