The city's air quality was good yesterday morning and improved to excellent in the afternoon due to the rain.
It was the first day Shanghai adopted the stricter Air Quality Index, or AQI. The city's environmental watchdog uses an illustration of a girl with various faces from smiling to crying to indicate air quality.
