Residents in dark about bulb scheme

SHANGHAI is to continue offering residents energy-saving bulbs at lower prices this year, but some locals seem unaware they're eligible for the discount.

While the city will kick off its energy-saving promotion week today, residents say the offer of green bulbs through neighborhood committees has been poorly publicized.

Some 5 million energy-saving bulbs will be distributed to local communities and residents receive a 30 percent discount if they buy the bulbs from their neighborhood committees.

But Elena Zhao, a 24-year-old local resident from Putuo District, told Shanghai Daily yesterday that she has never seen any public notices in her neighborhood publicizing the scheme.

"While we don't need to replace bulbs at the moment, it would be good to have the information," said Zhao.

There have also been complaints that the bulbs on offer are too dim and unsuitable for some light fittings.
