Shanghai No.1 for recycling of electronics
ABOUT 20 percent of used consumer electronics are recycled in Shanghai, making it number one among Chinese mainland cities but still well behind the average 40-50 percent in Western countries.
Shanghai, Beijing, Shenzhen, Guangzhou and Chengdu lead the mainland in recycling, a report issued by Shanghai Institute of Industry Transformation and Development and recycling website Aihuishou said yesterday.
Popular recycled products are iPhone, Xiaomi and Huawei mobiles, Sony PlayStations and DJI drones.
Men aged between 20 and 40 tend to be the main recyclers.
Aihuishou pays users for used computers and smartphones and after a technical check and price evaluation, onsells them online with partners such as JD.com and other websites.
Other services include Alibaba’s second-hand goods market Xianyu, and outlets of China Mobile and China Telecom.
The industry transformation and development institute warned that consumer electronics that were not recycled became toxic e-waste.
