鈥楽ick鈥 tracks come under inspection

MINHANG educational authorities have drafted regulations governing the installation of plastic running tracks at schools following a spate of incidents in which children fell sick after breathing in noxious fumes from newly laid surfaces.
The rules state that all such tracks must be installed before the end of July, while schools are closed for the summer holidays, the district’s education bureau told Shanghai Daily yesterday.
In October, a running track at the Pujiang Town No. 1 Kindergarten in Minhang was pulled up after some pupils suffered from coughs, nose bleeds and rashes. Tests found it had an excessive lead content.
The bureau said it also plans to introduce measures to ensure the safety of tracks put down in the future. It did not say when this would be, however.
It said also that it is planning to raise standards for the materials used in the production of school furniture materials.
