Some respite this week from heavy pollution

POLLUTION levels are set to fall today after reaching almost eight times the World Health Organization’s safe level yesterday.
Today is likely to see air pollution downgrade to moderately or lightly polluted as pollutants will be able to disperse better, officials said yesterday.
The arrival of a cold front around midweek will also help reduce the smog.
According to the Shanghai Environmental Monitoring Center, the city’s air quality reached heavily polluted yesterday, with its index peaking at 238 at 2pm.
The main pollutant was the PM2.5 particles, tiny particles that can get deep into the respiratory system, concentrations of which reached 190 micrograms per cubic meter — almost eight times the World Health Organization’s safety limit of 25 micrograms.
While some smog will persist for the next couple of days, a front of cold air arriving on Wednesday will bring a respite and send pollution levels down to “lightly polluted” or “good” on Thursday and Friday.
This week will be dry with highs of 12 degrees Celsius.
