Songjiang battery project fizzles in protest

SHANGHAI Guoxuan High-Tech Power Energy Co said it will withdraw investment in a battery factory in Songjiang District after local people staged a strong protest recently.
The company announced today that it will return the land to the district government and "will not seek any compensation." The statement was broadcast on a district TV channel this morning.
Protesters hailed the company's decision as "a victory of ordinary people" on the Internet. They had demonstrated on the street since late April after learning that a lithium-ion battery factory would be built in their vicinity.
They dismissed an environment evaluation report provided by a government agency. The report said 34 residential communities, one kindergarten and three rivers are within three kilometers of the planned factory, but said it would not cause much pollution.
The company said the planned factory could produce 31,500 batteries a year, worth 5 billion yuan.
