City names honorary citizens
THE city's top legislative body yesterday awarded the title "Honorary Citizen of Shanghai'' to British native Richard J. L. Yorke, president and chief executive officer at HSBC Bank (China) Co Ltd, and German native Klaus Toepfer, former under secretary general of the United Nations and a guest professor at Tongji University.
The Standing Committee of Shanghai People's Congress approved the proposal yesterday afternoon to reward the two foreigners for making outstanding contributions to the city.
"I am thrilled to be granted Honorary Citizen of Shanghai. What an honor," Yorke told Shanghai Daily yesterday upon learning the news.
"I am extremely grateful for the recognition by the Shanghai Municipality of my personal involvement in the community," Yorke said.
"Shanghai's development has been breathtaking in every respect... We hope to continue to work with the people of Shanghai," he said.
Yorke, 42, was awarded the title for helping "develop Shanghai into a financial services center," according to the city government.
He was also honored for his contribution in the training and development of local talent in the banking industry.
The government also valued his support of the city's education, and social welfare plans.
The city government said Toepfer, 71, has made substantial contributions to fostering cooperation between the United Nations Environment Programs and Tongji University. He also supported Shanghai's environmental protection efforts.
He has also donated 1 million yuan (US$146,358) to set up the Klaus Toepfer Environmental Scholarship. It aids university students majoring in environmental engineering.
He also acts as an environmental consultant to the city government.
Both Yorke and Toepfer had previously been awarded the Magnolia Award by the city government.
