10 million Chinese suffer from Schizophrenia

ABOUT 41 percent of schizophrenia patients in China suffer a relapse within the first year after they are discharged from hospital and as high as 60 percent can't go back to work or study, medical experts said today at a conference sponsored by Xi'an Janssen.

There are about 10 million schizophrenia patients in China, accounting for 70 percent of all people with mental diseases.

Schizophrenia is a major problem for both the family and the society, researchers told the conference.

"How to prevent and delay a patient's relapse is the focus of schizophrenia treatment and control because the repeated relapse can seriously debilitate the patient," said Dr Huang Jizhong, vice president of Shanghai Mental Health Center.

Currently, patients need to take medicines every day, which can result in stigma in patients and missing doses, while missing doses can trigger relapse.

Experts said China has approved giving Schizophrenia patients an injection once a month to prevent relapse. Shanghai is expected to start giving the injection in May.
