4 children sick with herbicide poisoning
SHANGHAI Children’s Medical Center yesterday said four children between the ages of 2 and 9 years were hospitalized for herbicide poisoning.
All the four children suffered from poisoning of paraquat, a highly toxic chemical with over 90 percent of fatality rate if it is taken orally.
A family in Nanhui area fell sick after eating vegetables from their own farm.
The boy was rushed to the center immediately after complaining of serious belly ache.
Investigation revealed that their neighbor had used paraquat in their own farm which also affected them.
Elsewhere, two children fell sick after eating tomatoes grown in their own farm.
In the third case, a man kept paraquat at home without storing it properly.
His 2-year-old boy found the bottle and played with it. He opened the cap and sprayed some chemicals onto his skin. He felt sick after licking the liquid and was sent to the hospital at once.
“It is rare that we received four similar cases within one week, making our doctors a little nervous,” said Dr Ren Hong from the hospital’s intensive care unit.
Sales of paraquat liquid and usage have been banned in China since July this year.
