Abandoned kids get help
CHILDREN from the Kaifeng Children Welfare Institute in Henan Province have begun to receive surgery to correct cleft lips or palates.
The 20 children, between six months and a year old, were abandoned by their family due to their defects.
Two children had surgery yesterday and all the children will have been operated on by May 21, said officials from Shanghai Ren'ai Hospital.
Thanks to a charity project launched by the hospital and the China Foundation for Disabled Persons, 5 million yuan (US$732,500) has been raised to help 500 children with cerebral palsy, 500 children with cleft lips or palates and 500 children with burns within five years.
"All the children covered by the fund were chosen by China Disabled Persons' Federation and sent to Ren'ai for treatment and rehabilitation," said Jin Zhuoping, a hospital official.
The 20 children from Kaifeng are the first group of children to benefit.
