Agencies hit as travelers cancel South Korea trips due to MERS
NEARLY 800 people have canceled trips to South Korea as a result of the MERS outbreak, a local travel agency said yesterday.
Shanghai Spring Tour said that its business has been “severely affected” by the crisis and that it is closely monitoring the situation in South Korea, where 36 MERS cases have already been confirmed.
Despite customers’ concerns, the China National Tourism Administration has yet to issue a travel warning for South Korea, so the company said it will continue to offer tours.
However, customer safety remains “our first priority,” and all of the agency’s tour guides have been told to be “extra vigilant,” it said.
Another company, China Youth Travel Service Shanghai, said that nearly 300 of its customers had canceled trips to South Korea since Monday.
The total includes 120 people booked on a company group tour that was scheduled to leave today, it said.
Shanghai Datong Travel Agency, said that several of its customers have “expressed concerns” about traveling to South Korea, though it declined to say if any trips had been canceled.
Online travel operator Ctrip said it is “following the situation” and working closely with hotels and airlines. It also refused to say how many of its customers had canceled.
South Korea last year overtook Thailand as the most popular overseas destination for group tours from Shanghai, with the number of visitors rising 30 percent year on year to more than 563,000, the Shanghai Tourism Administration said earlier.
South Korea’s top travel agency Hana Tour was quoted by the Yonhap News Agency as saying that about 300 Chinese people had canceled planned visits to the country amid growing fears over the MERS outbreak.
