Appeal for rare blood type foreigners
CITY blood authorities have issued an appeal for foreigners with a rare blood type who they can call on if there is an emergency.
The Shanghai Blood Administration Office is seeking to recruit donors with RH negative blood type, which is very rare among Asian people.
Only two to four per 1,000 people in China have RH negative blood type. However, it is found in around 15 percent of Caucasians.
"The participation of expatriates with RH negative will be very meaningful to the donor team to make it bigger and helpful to more people," said Xu Yiru, an official from the administration office, yesterday.
Shanghai needs at least 400 liters of RH negative blood every year. That figure is set to keep increasing due to rising clinical demand, storage for big international events and in planning for emergency situations.
In addition to RH negative blood, Shanghai also needs more type A blood. Demand for type A blood is higher than for the other common B, O and AB groups.
The breakdown of blood groups among China's population is: A, B and O each at about 30 percent; 10 percent who have type AB; with a small percentage with RH negative blood.
"But the clinical use of type A accounts for 35 percent of all the blood in Shanghai," Xu said.
"So we must collect more type A than other types to meet the clinical demand," according to Xu.
"There are several temporary shortages of type A each year," said Xu.
The office is seeking to create two "teams" of RH negative and A type donors who can come forward in times of need.
Any healthy people between 18 and 55 years with RH negative or type A blood can apply to join the teams by calling the hotline 800-620-2025 or leaving information on microblog weibo.com/shblood.
