Baby dies after decision to stop treatment

A WOMAN gave up emergency treatment to her newborn daughter after she was born eight weeks premature with various health problems.

Doctors from the city's suburban Fengxian District Central Hospital said yesterday that the mother's choice was "rational" as the baby would likely have suffered serious complications due to the premature delivery and her extremely poor health.

Due to severe bleeding caused by placenta praevia, the mother, an Anhui Province native surnamed Du, was rushed to the hospital on Sunday.

Doctors performed an emergency cesarean section. Both Du and her baby were in critical condition.

Doctors said the baby had a very weak heartbeat upon delivery, while other major life signs were hard to detect. She was put on a respirator immediately.

According to the director of the hospital's pediatric department, doctors informed the family about the baby's situation.

The mother said she had a discussion with her family and decided to give up the baby's treatment.

Doctors stopped treatment at 2pm and the baby died before 4pm.

Du said it was a heartbreaking decision, but she made it for a variety of reasons.

"I don't favor a boy over a girl," Du said. "I just want my three-year-old daughter to have a sister or brother. But I didn't want my baby to suffer all her life."
