Baby with fatty blood poses challenge for city’s doctors

DOCTORS at a hospital in Shanghai are trying to work out a course of treatment for a baby boy with a rare blood disorder.

The unnamed 2-month-old was diagnosed with a congenital form of hyperlipidemia (high cholesterol), which means his body can’t burn or digest the fat in his diet.

The case is the first of its kind recorded in the city.

“It is extremely rare to see a newborn with this problem,” said Dr Zhu Jianxing, director of neonatology at Xinhua Hospital, adding that it is the first case he has seen in a 30-year career.

As a result, there is no treatment guidance available, he said.

“The usual drip medication is not suitable for newborns as it can cause serious liver and kidney damage,” he said.

“The treatment program has to be long-term and will require input from specialists in nutrition and digestion.”

Although the baby is physically ready to be discharged, he will be kept at the hospital for a few more days while doctors decide the best course of action.

The infant, who was born on August 30 in central China’s Henan Province, was admitted to Xinhua Hospital two weeks ago.
