Bacteria first found at city airport on a fly
SHANGHAI quarantine authorities reported a type of bacteria found for the first time on Chinese mainland on Wednesday. The bacteria was found on a fly and is related to a fatal disease, city quarantine officials said yesterday, but adding that there is no need to worry that it poses immediate threat to the public with infection.
The Shanghai Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau nabbed 20 flies at the Pudong International Airport area recently, and the bacteria was found on one of the flies.
The bureau said the bacteria-carrying fly was brought into the port through imported cargos. Officials have carried out necessary sanitary measures at the airport to maintain hygiene of the airport.
The bacteria, known as wohlfahrtiimonas chitiniclastica, once caused cases of fulminant sepsis in France and Argentina. But the disease is not contagious, officials said. Study showed that mortality rate caused by sepsis is even higher than heart attack. Sepsis patients suffer from multiple organs failure.
The bureau has reported the bacteria case to the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine.
